Focus areas

ICVA is a global network of 160 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) active in 160 countries, operating at global, regional, national and local levels.

Members are humanitarian NGOs, large and small, secular and faith based, national and international, joined through a common commitment to principled humanitarian action.

As a unique global network of NGOs

Through ICVA, Members can:

  • Influence global policy and practice through access to UN and inter-governmental humanitarian policy and decision makers.
  • Participate in collective NGO advocacy on humanitarian issues.
  • Bring the field realities of humanitarian practice to global and regional forums.
  • Participate in the IASC mechanisms, through ICVA’s seats as a standing invitee to the IASC.
  • Network, collaborate and exchange with a diverse global NGO membership, and other humanitarian stakeholders.
  • Stay informed on key debates and issues relevant to operations.
  • Shape the strategic direction of ICVA, be eligible to serve on the ICVA Board, and vote at the ICVA General Assembly.
Humanitarian principles and standards

ICVA members are encouraged to demonstrate, in all relevant situations, a commitment  to:

  • the Humanitarian principles, including the Code of Conduct for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and NGOs in Disaster Relief.
  • collaboration with other NGOs and/or partner agencies, in line with the Principles of Partnership.
  • prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse as guided by the Statement of Commitment on Eliminating Sexual Exploitation and Abuse by UN and Non-UN Personnel, and ICVA members Commitment  and motion to action on PSEA and sexual harassment
  • quality and accountability in humanitarian action, including use of the Sphere Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Disaster Response.
  • addressing the climate and environment crises as per the ICVA Commitment and motion to action on Climate and the Environment
Member only working groups

Open to members only, ICVA has a range of working groups that provide a platform for members to exchange information, communicate key developments in humanitarian operations and policy level work, and to identify opportunities for collective advocacy.

Membership

Membership is open to legally registered non-profit organizations that meet the following criteria:

  • Mission Alignment: The organization’s mission should be consistent with ICVA’s mission, demonstrating a commitment to influencing humanitarian policy and practice.

 

  • Capacity for Participation: Applicants for members should possess sufficient capacity to actively engage in ICVA’s governance and workspaces. This includes contributing to discussions, participating in decision making process and collaborating effectively with other members.

 

  • Financial Obligations: ICVA operates on a membership fee structure. The annual membership fee ranges from CHF 500 to CHF 12000, depending on the organization’s annual budget and expenses. The fee schedule and detailed information on membership criteria can be found in this document. It is important to note that ICVA is not a donor organization and cannot provide financial aid to its members.  Therefore, applicants should be prepared to fulfill their financial obligations independently.

Types of membership

Who can join ICVA

Full ICVA membership is open to

  • national NGOs
  • international NGO
  • country, regional or international consortia or network of NGOs.

Observer status membership is open to:

  • NGOs that because of constitutional constraints or reasons of principle and cannot be associated with the views and/or positions adopted by ICVA, but still wish to be associated with the network.
  • Observer status members are not able to vote at the General Assembly nor stand for the ICVA Board.

 

Affiliate status membership is open to

  • academic and research institutes that have existing activities of a human rights/humanitarian nature or existing activities of benefit to NGOs. Affiliate membership provides a means to make better links between their work and the work of ICVA members.
  • Affiliate status members are not able to vote at the General Assembly nor stand for the ICVA Board.

 

Membership criteria

Criteria

An organization applying for membership of ICVA will be assessed against the following criteria. The organization should:

  1. Be an independent body established by a group of private individuals or organizations.
  2. Have non-governmental, non-profit legal status in its country of incorporation.
  3. Be non-partisan (operate without discrimination in regard to race, nationality, gender, political or religious conviction or social and economic background).
  4. Have human rights/humanitarian programmes and/or activities that are consistent with the purposes of ICVA as described in ICVA’s Statutes (Article II) and Mission Statement.
  5. Be governed by an independent, voluntary, and active board of directors.
  6. Have a sustainable level of financial support.
  7. Have a record of financial responsibility and accountability.
  8. Have a record of accomplishing its objectives.
  9. State its commitment to participate in ICVA’s activities as outlined in the ICVA Strategic Plan.
  10. Acknowledge that they are not listed on the UN Security Council List, neither are their affiliates or any of their individuals.
  11. Demonstrate, in all relevant situations, a commitment to ICVA standards and principles
Annual membership fees

Membership dues

All ICVA Members, Observers and Affiliates pay an annual membership fee. ICVA’s financial year runs from 1 January until 31 December. The fee structure is in Swiss francs (CHF). The fees are set on a sliding scale based on the annual budget/income of each organization.

Two thirds of ICVA’s funding comes from government and foundation grants.  Membership fees are crucial to ICVA to cover core costs and have some independence from grant funding.

Non-payment of Membership Dues can lead to suspension and termination of membership in accordance with the ICVA Statutes.

ICVA members pay an annual membership fee. The fee structure is set out in this document.  Fees are in Swiss francs (CHF).

Application procedure

What Applicants should do:

Contact the secretariat@icvanetwork.org to express your interest in becoming a member.  You will then receive a Membership Application form.

Return the completed Application form to the ICVA Secretariat with the following documents in English or French:

  • Statutes, constitution, founding charter, or similar document;
  • Proof of non-governmental and non-profit legal status;
  • Two most recent annual reports and audited financial statements, including sources of income and current donors;
  • Composition and term of executive body (board of directors or equivalent), including names and institutional affiliations;
  • Confirmation of payment of the application fee by bank transfer to ICVA of Swiss francs (CHF) 75.00 (not including bank charges); and
  • If your organization has committed to any additional codes of conduct or similar documents, or if you have been accredited by a quality/accountability organization, please send a copy of the code or standard with your application or supply an Internet address.

Your application will then be reviewed by the Membership committee of the ICVA Board.

Once approved for membership each member organization will confirm in writing the person(s) that will act as its representative(s) to ICVA.
