Background

Despite progress in publishing financial and programmatic data, publicly available humanitarian financial data remains patchy and opaque. While many international NGOs report data through platforms like the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) and the Financial Tracking Service (FTS), the purpose of this reporting is often donor compliance—not impact.

ICVA’s new report, ‘Publish Once, Use Often: Realising the Promise of Data in Humanitarian Work examines the current state of data publication among ICVA members and explores the barriers that hinder meaningful, inclusive data sharing. Drawing on data analysis and interviews with 21 organisations across Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America, the report provides a roadmap for making data transparency a tool for shared decision-making, equitable partnerships and better use of limited resources.

Objectives of the session

  • To present the key findings and recommendations from the report.
  • To facilitate an open discussion on how to move from compliance to collaboration in data sharing.
  • To explore concrete actions to build a more inclusive and effective transparency ecosystem.
